TRUSTING THE FAITHFUL AND HOLY GOD

                                                by Cathy Brown

In the book of Psalm, there are many encouraging and thought provoking words.  Among which are the simple words of the psalmist to  “put your trust in God”.  (Psalm 4: 5) The psalmist stated that there is hope in trusting God for he declared, “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer: my God, my strength, in whom I will trust”.  (Psalm 18:2) Trusting was so commonplace for the psalmist that he boldly proclaimed,

“ . . . the  word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.” (Psalm 18:30)

Like the psalmist, God’s chosen are burdened with trials day after day and night after night, and like the psalmist, the saints of God are called to trust in the living Lord day after day and night after night.  Trials turn joy to discouragement, and discouragement leads to defeat, but the psalmist, who did not yield to defeat, exhorted, “but let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice:  let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.”   (Psalm 5: 11)  Jesus said, “These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.”  (John 15: 11) It is impossible to have joy when we are not trusting in God.  Our soul knows to trust, but it is so easily tempted to listen to the lying whispers of Satan and the fables of man than to remain faithful in trusting God.

Furthermore, the psalmist encouraged us to, “Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him:  God is a refuge for us.”  (Psalm 62:8)  Consider these words.  If we pour out our hearts before the Lord, with our trials, with our cries of suffering, we can be assured that He is our refuge, our place of safety, our strong tower.  The psalmist confidently exclaimed, “Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!”  (Psalm 31: 19) Trust that is required is trust that is sustained, divinely sustained!  It is the will of God that we are afflicted that we “might learn thy statutes” (Psalm 119: 71), and that we learn to trust Him who alone is worthy.  God takes care of our every need.  “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”  (Philippians 4: 19)

Let our prayer be “O my God, I trust in thee:  let me not be ashamed; let not mine enemies triumph over me.”  (Psalm 25: 2)  Let us be confident in Him and know that “He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust:  his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.”  (Psalm 91: 4)  Then, as saints of God we can joyfully proclaim, “Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.”  (Psalm 2: 12)  Bless the Lord, O my soul!
