partakers of Christ

by Elder Tim Brown

Hebrews 3:14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end.

Brethren, how often do you think about how you are partakers of Christ. What does it mean to partake of Christ.? Let us first meditate upon what it does not mean. To partake in Christ is to not continue in sin. It is not to empower us that we might follow our own desires and self will. It is not to uplift ourselves in understanding and righteousness. It is not the giving of knowledge so that we might have power to achieve all at our disposal. This world is so focused upon themselves and unfortunately and sadly brethren we sometimes err and walk after this manner as well. The Christian religionist of today see the death of Christ and the gifts of Christ as empowerment for their self will. When we strip away the facade that covers the root of the false Christian religion today, we will see the glorification and up lifting of mankind to its own demise.

Recently I heard on the news that secularism was winning the day, yet the commentator blamed the media for its promotion of secularism not the Christian religion of the day for its ineffectiveness. The commentator could not understand what was going wrong in the Christianity of America that this could be possible. Brethren we certainly know what is wrong with Christianity in America today. It has gone a whoring and invited secularism into its bed and has defiled the wonderful marriage between the church and Christ. What the commentator did not realize was that the very thing he believed was wrong with America, secularism, was actually the very thing for which Christianity of America strives for. The measurement of a church in America is based on populist and secular views in the so called Christians of the day. The preachers of the land in all the false pulpits of the land from Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, on down through Catholicism bare the blood of truth upon their hands and tongues. God was not mocked during the favored time of Israel's infidelity and He shall not be mocked during this time of infidelity with the United States.

Let us turn away from this world as the sorrow mounts. We must meditate upon all that Christ did and is to understand what it truly is that the elect partakes in with Christ. Christ although he was empowered and all powerful did not exalt himself and lift His name up, He honored His Father above all, yet man sees the sacrifice of Christ as their means to empower and exalt themselves. Let us not take the sacrifice of Christ for granted but most assuredly let us not abuse it either. We partake in the understanding and righteousness of our Savior that we might bow before the righteous throne guilty and humbled as dark and depraved sinners that have been given life by partaking in Christ's death and resurrection and ultimately His life. We partake in Christ's knowledge so that we might know in part the great omnipotent power of the Father, the will of the Father, the love of the Father, and righteousness of the Father. The partaking can be magnified to many singular attributes, but we as believers are instructed that we are partakers of his death, resurrection, and his life.

The difficulty of this verse is that we the elect are called to remain steadfast until the end. A self sufficient man would look upon this as a work of one's self in order to achieve  this partaking. Yet, I exhort you to know that the confidence and steadfastness that remains is only possible because you as the elect of God are made to be partakers with Christ.  Let us not be so high minded to approach the word of God believing that we must do or not do in order to participate in the partaking. It is because the grace of God has called and made us partakers that we are able to do. Your life is a manifestation of the work of salvation performed in you or not in you. As the cloth of time is slowly pulled away to reveal the finished will of the Father, a believer catches a glimpse of their eternal state as the evidence of faith, hope, and charity are given to those who have been made to be partakers of Christ and are preserved unto the end to remain steadfast in the confidence in which we began.

Praise be to God that salvation is not left unto me and praise be to God we have been made partakers of Christ that we might obey and live unto God as His faithful servants that he may be glorified and honored for all eternity. To God be the glory!
