GUIDANCE

by Elder Shawn Reynolds

I stand amazed continually in my life of God and His awesome power. It is a humbling and gratifying time when the Lord brings me to my knees and reveals to me that I am nothing without Him, and that by His grace alone I am saved, if I am saved at all. Each day, when led by the Holy Spirit, I pray and ask God for guidance in my daily life, and that He would lead me to that which is good and pleasing to Him.

Romans 3:10,11 remind us that ‘ is none righteous, no not one’ and that ‘ is none that understand or seek after God’ We see by these verses that there are none that have goodness in them of themselves, nor are there any that seek after God. This truly shows are depraved nature and that we stand in need of God’ grace, mercy, and guidance each day of our lives. To be revealed this low estate and that we must be led by Him is only by God’ mercy. David gives us an example of how we are to pray for God’ guidance in Psalm 143:10. David writes, " me to do thy will, for thou art my God, thy spirit is good, lead me into the land of uprightness." As much that was given to David, we see here that he did not presume to know anything of himself as he beseeches God for guidance and leading into the paths of righteousness. What a lesson this is for our lives when pride and haughtiness creep into our thoughts and actions, and we exalt ourselves higher than we are. We as depraved sinners, believe that we know what is best for our lives, but in all actuality, we can do nothing without God’ guiding hand in what He has predestinated us to do.

In Hebrews 13:5b, we read that God will never leave nor forsake His own. This is echoed in Psalm 48:14, when the Psalmist writes, " this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death." By these two verses we see two very important truths, that God does not forsake His people, nor does He ever stop guiding their paths. How could a Sovereign God not direct the paths of His people when he knows what things they have need of before they ask (Math 6:8) and knowing that He works all things in concert for them that Love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28)?

Finally, in John 16:13 we are told how we are to be guided, it reads " when he, the spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth." It is the work of the Holy Spirit that guides each and every one of God’ people every day. He guides us in our decisions, actions, thoughts, and works. He guides us in the worship of the one true and living God, and He guides our paths of understanding by quickening the precious truths of Christ the Saviour to His people. Jesus called the Holy Spirit the comforter (John 15:26), a name which rings so true to a child of God. For it is the Holy Spirit that comforts us in our time of need and guides us into the paths that God has ordained us to walk in every day. Do you believe that God directs your paths in all that you do each day? Or do you believe that things just happen according to chance or circumstance, or that maybe you produce them on your own? My hope and prayer for this fellowship is that we are enabled to pray as David did as we are led by the Holy Spirit. That we may beseech the Lord at all times to teach us His will and to guide our paths for His glory, and to lead us to that land of uprightness. That we are drawn to the word of God for guidance, for we are told in Psalm 119:105, that the word is ’ a lamp unto my feet , and a light unto my path’
